So this morning I took my first German shower. They shut the water off so that they don't waste water. I love how environmentally friendly they are here. They have wind turbines and solar panels everywhere. It's great.
Anyways, our first stop today was Wernigerode. We walked around the outside of this really amazing castle and it was very pretty because it was at the top of a mountain overlooking a very old town with orange roofs. We had some time to walk around and eat lunch, so me, Leah, Alex, Natalya and Sydney walked around the town. We found a little store that sold gelato, so we went in and bought some so that we could sit and eat lunch there. Leah and I shared a cup of cookie flavored and caramel flavored gelato. My hosts made me a very nice lunch with a ham and cheese sandwich, a salami sandwich (not my favorite thing ever... I only had one bite. But they were half sandwhiches), a banana, a baby bell, a weird salami in a package thing, some kinder chocolate and this yummy cookie thing that was a lot like an Oreo. It was so much, but I definitely didn't have the most. They are all so generous!
After that, we hopped back on the bus and went to Goslar, an even older city that used to be where the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire was. We saw the outside of the palace and walked down to the center of the town. Again, we had time to walk around and shop. We met back at the center at 3 to watch the bell clock go off and the little figurines come out and dance around. It was very cool.
We took the bus back to the school, passing more open fields and farm lands than towns themselves. It's amazing. Björns mom picked me and Richie up and brought me home. I had about a half an hour to check Facebook before Jakob's mom and sister got me in the car to go out to dinner. First, though, we stopped to pick up Hannah's boyfriend, Marius (I WANTED TO ASK HIM ABOUT LES MIS BUT I DON'T THINK HE SPOKE VERY GOOD ENGLISH), who's family breeds black and brown labs! They had ten, 4 week old, puppies! I was able to go out and say hello to them. They were very cute and I wanted one. :) we went to dinner in the town of Brunswick, where I had Schnitzel!! Woah! German food! It was so delicious. I know my parents will be surprised at this, but it had a cream and mushroom sauce on it and I even ate the mushrooms! It came with French fries that I dipped in the sauce. It was so good oh my goodness. It was a very nice dinner. I'm actually starting to understand a little bit of what their saying. Body language and tone of voice make a huge difference. Jakob translated a little bit, and his dad asked me a few questions. It was nice, even though I didn't understand. I think that other kids would have been awkward if they were put in that position. I cracked jokes where I could and asked Jakob about what they were talking about. Oh yeah! His mother and father had fried cheese with toast, butter, jam, and fruit for dinner! It was very interesting. I had never seen something like that.
We got home about an hour ago, and I think I'm going to bed soon. This whole picture thing isn't working too well, but I'll mess around with it tomorrow. Off to bed!:)
Auf Wiedersehen!
Zoë :)
P.s. I'm learning some German! :) I've been saying simple things to people in the stores and I'm looking forward to learning more! The flip book of phrases that I got from Pop-Pop is very helpful. I'm hoping to use the Berlin tour guide when. We go there tomorrow! :)
Sounds like a good day and I can only imagine what the castle and view was like. Good for you for trying new foods!!
